Graduation Spookiness!

Witches, monsters, and a host of other characters both scary and cute descended upon CSLI this past Halloween to celebrate graduation. The annual Halloween Grad Party was once again a spectacular success as everyone enjoyed showing off their fantastic costumes which they had worked so hard on!
Halloween Grad Party

Everybody was incredibly dressed but only one person could be chosen for best costume and so the prize gift basket went to Lukas Reber from Switzerland.

A great time was had by all, with the party afterwards moving to a downtown nightclub for dancing and fun with all the other wacky Canadians decked out in their costumes as well!

Costume Winner

Special congratulations also go out to all the students in both September and October who won medals for student of the class and, of course, to both of our Student of the Month winners, Rafael Cieslak from Brazil and Sergio Lopez from Spain, who were each rewarded with a 4-week scholarship to study for free at CSLI! Congratulations to all!

CSLI Top of the Heap!
CCA Congratulations to CSLI for having been selected as the winner of the 2008 Canadian Consumer`s Choice Award in the category of language schools! For recipients, this award is not only the crowning achievement of their efforts, but more importantly it also represents the most valuable reward of all, the knowledge that they have earned the trust and loyalty of consumers. We have always been proud of our dedication to providing our students with amazing study abroad experiences and this has always been reward enough for all of our staff. However, it is always nice to receive a pat on the back for a job well done! If you would like some more information on these awards and what they mean, please check out the Consumer`s Choice Award website at: www.ccaward.com/new/ce/home.html

The Gift of Giving at CSLI!
Throughout the summer and into Autumn, CSLI has been actively involved in a number of fundraising activities in order to raise money for two main causes, the Terry Fox Foundation and the BC Lung Association. Some of the charity events held included 50/50 lottery draws, mystery box auctions, and the extremely popular "pie-in-the-teacher`s face" auction. This event, in particular, brought everyone together for a good laugh for a great cause! The team spirit among both staff and students was fantastic and through the efforts of all, $425 was raised for charity. We are so proud of all the staff and students for their generosity in helping out such wonderful causes. Thanks again to all and we hope this spirit of giving will continue as we join in the food drive for the Vancouver Food Bank as well as toy donations for underprivileged children. Good job CSLI for showing that you really do care!! http://www.csli.com/about_csli/csli_cares.html

Pie in the face

Bulls Run Wild at CSLI!
Running Bulls International Theme Day continues to be an exciting part of life at CSLI! Over the past few months we have enjoyed amazing desserts from Thailand, tacos from Mexico, samba dancing with the Brazilian crew, and, yes, our Spanish students even recreated the world famous running of the bulls through the hallways of CSLI! Thursday of every week we have been able to get together and enjoy the food and culture of a different country. As always it is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our friends` customs and way of life, and of course speak English! Check out our monthly calendar to see what amazing countries are on the agenda in the weeks to come

Listen Up!
The Listening and Pronunciation Class is still one of the fastest roads to improvement of overall communication skills at CSLI! Through intensive listening exercises involving current events taken from both local and national news programs, students can improve not only their comprehension skills but also their vocabulary, usage of natural English, and pronunciation. Using movies, songs, and popular TV programs also makes every class interesting and you will be amazed at how our interactive approach to learning pronunciation helps bring you closer to natural Canadian speech! Challenge yourself and give it a listen!

The Queen of Green!
Erika - Queen of Greeen!
Always looking to find ways of helping the environment and reduce our carbon footprint, CSLI once again announced the winner of our semi-annual Green Award. This time around was an extremely close call with Mikey, who is always looking for more environmentally methods of running things, chosen as the runner-up to this season`s winner, Erika Herndier! Erika has always kept a close eye on the green situation at CSLI and says things have really improved over the years! We promise to try not to use styrofoam plates and cups, Erika!

Look Who`s Talking!

Thanks to CSLI, making the transition to living in a new country and using a new language is made easily. This was my second time being at CSLI. Last time I was here I was awarded student of the month and given a 4-week scholarship. I am very thankful to the school for this. I came back because CSLI makes you part of a large family. They really do a good job of uniting the world in English. The teachers are very friendly and have a wide range of knowledge. Not only do you learn English but you also learn about Canadian culture and how diverse it is. I am sorry that my month has passed by so quickly. I hope that I can come again to Vancouver to attend CSLI's classes and meet new friends.

Words of advice to new students both young and old, "You must fully embrace a new language. That means using it everyday, getting out and meeting new friends, and realizing that English is a tool of communication. Do not just try to memorize new words and grammar. Use the language for what it was meant, communicating thoughts and ideas."

Thank you again CSLI, I will always carry great memories of my time at your school.
