CSLI's Speech Contest in April was a big success. Over 15 students participated, giving speeches on a variety of topics. All students were awarded for an outstanding quality that they demonstrated throughout their speech: some prizes include most spontaneous, funniest, most informative, and best body language. Our Grand Prize winner was Michael from Taiwan, with Young Seo from Korea winning Second Prize, and Emi from Japan coming in Third. Congratulations to everyone! The May contest will be Idioms - crack open those books and brush up on your idioms!

Study skills

A positive attitude is extremely important if you want to improve your English skills. Students who worry about their improvement do not improve as quickly as students who are positively motivated to improve. It is a fact that students cannot always see when they are improving - so you might think your English is not getting better, even when it is! It is therefore useful to recognize this fact, and thinking (and saying) "Every day, in every way, my English is getting better and better" can help you feel more positive about your improvement. Put a large paper with this sentence somewhere near your study area to help motivate you to continue your good work!

Strong learners have the ability to observe and recognize details. You can practice these skills by looking at a picture in a magazine or newspaper - describe out loud everything you can about what you see, every detail. This kind of skill is tested in Cambridge and TOEIC exams, and yet this practice activity builds a number of skills. You will be able to improve your vocabulary - you can look up words you don't know in English in your dictionary. You will also train your brain to notice and recognize details, something that will improve your overall learning.

An Afternoon at the Denman
Student of the month CSLI's students all crowded into the Denman Theatre in the West End of Vancouver for a private graduation party. We said goodbye to many students, and then celebrated the best student in each class by presenting them with a medal. The award was then given to the Student of the Month - Moritz Wedekind of Germany wins a four-week scholarship to continue his studies full-time at CSLI. Congratulations!

We then had a yummy hot-dog lunch before enjoying a private screening of the hit comedy movie "A Night At The Museum"

On-site TOEIC Tests

The TOEIC (Test Of English for International Communication) is an internationally recognized test that assesses proficiency in a number of English skill areas. Throughout Asia and Europe, the TOEIC test is used by companies as a gauge for their employees' or candidates' English level. At CSLI you can both study to prepare for the TOEIC test and take the test - talk about convenient! Test dates are offered every month for CSLI students. Fun Friday Activities
Steamclock in Gastown
April was a fun and also practical month for our free Friday Activities. Some useful classes that were offered included classes on Resume Writing, Verb Tenses, Slang, and Grammar. Tourist-minded students could take tours of Whistler, Granville Island Brewery, and Gastown, while the more active ones could learn Salsa Dancing, Golfing, and Tennis. With the warmer temperatures and clearer skies, we can look forward to more outdoor activities in the coming months.

Business Class

CSLI's Business Class is a dynamic course that helps prepare students for working in English-speaking business environments. The provided course material is integrated through role-play situations, research projects and presentations, and dialogues. Practice topics include job interviews, meetings, negotiations, and business-style writing. If you're looking for a job that will enable you to use English, taking our Business Class will give you the skills you need.

Alexandra Eckerle returned to CSLI for her third study visit. She had this to say about her experience:

Back again - for the third time! - and I'm happy to see that most of the teachers I know are still around. Once again I enjoyed my time at CSLI very much. Maybe even more this time because my boyfriend Michael came along.

CSLI is a great place to meet people from all over the world and I'm proud to call some of them my friends now. It's nice to be a part of the large CSLI family.

Keep this spirit up! Hope to see you again soon.

Our former student Khaled Abuzayan (2004-5) from Libya recently wrote from Liverpool, England:

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for my lateness in writing. I was snowed under due to my studies. I miss you all so much, I miss every single person at CSLI whether staff or student.

I had such great time with you guys, and I will never forget those months.

Keep in touch and you are welcome any time (Liverpool misses you). Here are some pictures with Ali (Turkish guy) and Hadhom (our Libyan soccer star).

Best regards to you, hi to all the staff. Time or distance won't stop our communications - please tell CSLI students that.

Khaled
