did you say? |
| December’s exciting competition
was our Pronunciation Contest. Students had to be able to pronounce
some difficult words, distinguish between similar sounding words
and identically spelled words, and correctly identify syllable
stress. Our 20 participating students quickly narrowed down
to three, and a long final round finally determined the winner
and runners-up: Sayo from Japan came in first,
with Man Kheum from Korea winning second, and
Andy from Korea was third. Congratulations
to the winners! Next month: the ever-challenging Phrasal Verbs! |

| The season to give |
 |
In Canada, Christmas time is a time for helping
out the less fortunate. Since our school was founded in 1992,
CSLI has regularly contributed to a variety of charitable causes,
and Christmas time is one of our busiest seasons.
Every year in Vancouver, citizens bring presents for poor children
and are treated to a deluxe breakfast at the Pan Pacific hotel
– as usual, CSLI had a large group of students and staff
attending the event. Through waffle breakfasts, bake sales,
and raffles, CSLI was able to raise over $300 for the Food Bank
and $160 for a Vila Isabel, a Brazilian Charity. Our thanks
to our students, staff, and homestays for their generosity that
helps the underprivileged. |
| Christmas Activities |
In the buildup to Christmas, CSLI
hosts a number of Friday activities that allow students to experience
North American Christmas traditions. These included Gingerbread
home building, Christmas Carol Listening and Pronunciation Class,
Christmas Cooking and Cocktail Making Class, Stanley Park Christmas
Train Ride, and the Van Dusen Festival of Lights. These activities
enabled our students to enjoy Christmas celebrations with their
friends and teachers when they are far away from home.

| Santa Claus is coming…to
CSLI! |
| CSLI’s annual Christmas was
once again a big hit with all! A delicious traditional Christmas
meal was served for lunch: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes,
salad, and all the trimmings. |
 |
After this delicious food, we presented graduation certificates
to our departing CSLI student, including our very popular students
from IRC in Okinawa. The best students in each class then received
medals to recognize their achievement, and the Student of the
Month award was presented to Miwako from Japan
– she wins a four-week full-time scholarship to come back
to study at CSLI. We also presented our Ambassador of the Year
award, a special prize to acknowledge someone who has helped
most to bridge their country and Canada, to Yaz from
Tourism Vancouver. |

After this, dedicated actors presented a Christmas play, our
choir sang a beautiful selection of Christmas Carols, each class
sang carols… and we had a special visitor in a red suit!
Santa came to town, and gave students a traditional souvenir
while they posed for photos. |

|
| May old acquaintance
be forgot… |
| CSLI students rang in the New Year
with drinks and traditional New Year’s songs. Andrew got
things rolling as students explained New Year’s traditions
in their country, and Lani got the dancing going. Students toasted
each other and shared their resolutions for the NewYear! |
| Focus on…Practical English |
 |
| Most students coming to Canada want
to improve their ability to communicate. CSLI’s Practical
English classes give them a chance to develop all of the necessary
skills to improve interaction in English: vocabulary, conversation,
writing, listening, grammar, and pronunciation. All these are
presented in a balanced way to help students practice the required
skills to improve their communication. The course covers a different
topic every week, and is available in a variety of levels to
suit the needs of each student that arrives at CSLI. We suggest
that all students start in Practical English, regardless of
their level, before they focus on specialty classes. For more
information, please see http://www.csli.com/programs/csli_courses.html |

| Look Who’s
Talking |
Takuma Ozaki, who studied at CSLI in
2005, writes about a reunion in Korea:
I went to Seoul (Korea) from Tokyo (Japan) on December 16 to
18, and I met Korean CSLI friends after an interval of 1 year
8 months since we were in Vancouver. Seok Gyu and
Jae Mi got married. The wedding took place on December
17th.
They look very happy.
Seok Gyu and Jae Mi were very busy, and they have gone to Australia
on their honeymoon, so I have reported to you instead of them. |
 |
Another former CSLI student, Midori
Tanikawa (1999-2000), got married recently:
I got married on Dec 17 in Himeji, which is my hometown. There
were many guests from different places, such as Canada, America,
Tokyo, Miyazaki, Nagoya, etc. We had a memorable time together.
David and I really appreciated our guests' warm hearts.
And CSLI’s wonderful long-time teacher Christine Loveday
got married on December 29th. Her dinner party included a lovely
reunion with former CSLI teacher Charmley.
Congratulations to the happy couples! |
