| HAPPY
NEW YEAR! |
After a very short break, CSLI is
back in full swing for 2007! January was filled with fun and
challenging classes and an abundance of extra-curricular activities
for students to practice their English and to have a whole lot
of fun!!! |
| DANCING - EATING
- DRINKING - BRAZILIAN STYLE!!!! |
Every Thursday night, excited groups
of CSLI students gather and head out to a local restaurant to
experience a night of food, fun and learning about different
cultures. Listen to our very own Brazilian student Lara tell
about the Brazilian night in her own words:
Brazilian night was really great. There were almost fifty students
of different nationalities; however, most of the students were
Brazilian. The restaurant was playing Brazilian songs and some
Carnival songs too. It is a small restaurant but really good.
Almost everybody ate "beef a parmegiana" which is a popular
Brazilian plate. There was another plate that is made with shrimp
and it's delicious too.
At the end of the night when everybody finished dinner we went
to the middle of the restaurant to dance and all the Brazilians
were teaching the other students how to samba and dance to Brazilian
songs. We danced for almost two hours and that's how the Brazilian
night ended, with samba and everybody taking pictures together.
The month of February will include Indian Night, Chinese Night
and Mexican Night!

| "THE ITALIAN JOB"
AND OTHER FRIDAY ACTIVITIES! |
Friday activities during the month
of January included a tour of Granville Island and beer-tasting
at the Granville Island Brewing Company, a salsa class, an Italian
cooking lesson followed by the movie "The Italian Job",
a pub night, a sushi-making class, and two activities to learn
about and practice playing famous Canadian winter sports: curling
and ice-skating! The academic classes offered on Friday were
also popular with students. They included lessons on: phrasal
verbs, telephone skills, modals, idioms, creative writing, and
a special business class focused on resume writing together
with interview skills.
On Fridays in February, students can look forward to many other
academic classes and visiting the Stanley Park Aquarium, going
to Whistler, and touring Chinatown with a delicious Chinese
food lunch, as well as Chinese New Year and Valentine's celebrations...

| THE PHRASAL VERB
CONTEST "LIVENS THINGS UP!" |
This month's exciting contest was a challenging
phrasal verb competition!
Many brave and diligent students participated, but the three
that came out on top were: Danilo Araujo from Brazil in third
place, Renata Oliveira from Brazil in second place, and Carolina
Valenzuela from Mexico in first place.
Congratulations to all participants and especially to our three
winners! February's contest will be a Canadian Trivia Contest
in which students can demonstrate their knowledge about the
Great White North (Canada)! |

TEACHERS REALLY
DO MAKE THE BEST STUDENTS! TESOL (Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages) Diploma Class |
This month brings another eager
group of students for the TESOL diploma class. This class is
a very creative and dynamic class specifically designed to teach
various teaching methodologies, classroom management skills,
lesson planning and development, practical correction techniques,
student and textbook assessment, and motivational skills. It
is especially for students who want to be able to teach or tutor
English in their own countries, but it is also very valuable
for all students who want to recognize their own mistakes, and
improve their public speaking skills. Students have the opportunity
to make classroom observations and practice teaching. This special
diploma program also requires student to give numerous individual
and team presentations.
|
| CARNIVAL GRADUATION |
| For January's special graduation party, CSLI had its
very own Carnival! All students had a chance to make a
festive and beautiful mask to wear and there was a prize
for the student who put the most effort into making an
exceptional mask. The prize went to Suely from Brazil.
Congratulations! |
 |
|

After presenting the graduating students with their hard-earned
certificates, the teachers presented the student of the month
medals to the most deserving students in their classes. Then
came the time to reward one student who really made an exceptional
effort to make CSLI an even better place to learn English. This
student participated in all the extra activities offered at
CSLI and made an effort to meet new students and make them feel
at home.
This student of the month for January 2007 is Carolina Valanzuela
from Mexico! She receives a special gift from CSLI which includes
a free one month scholarship! Congratulations Carolina and "Viva
Mexico!" |
The party didn't stop there - all students enjoyed a home made
Brazilian lunch of feijoada with rice and cornbread muffins,
and then to work off the pounds added to our bodies, staff,
teachers and students alike learned how to dance the samba and
spent the rest of the afternoon dancing, laughing, and even
joining in a limbo contest!
We even had to turn on the air conditioner even though it's
in the middle of winter! |

| IN MEMORIAM |
We at CSLI were all very saddened
and shocked to hear of the untimely death of our former teacher
Emily Longworth. Emily had been traveling in South America with
her Australian friend Lauren when both girls died in their sleep
in a hotel fire. While we know that she did not suffer as she
passed on, we are very saddened by having lost a special friend
and colleague. Her web blog is a place that friends and former
students can go to leave messages – please go to the message
board at www.getjealous.com/dirtyfeet.
In her memory, a scholarship has been set up – donations
to the Emily Longworth New Teachers’ Creative Activities
fund can be made online at www.vancouverfoundation.bc.ca/Donate/donateonline.asp
- please search for Emily Longworth to donate to her fund.

| LOOK WHO'S TALKING |
Our former manager Keith
in Czech became a daddy and here is a message from him.
Hi all,
I have great news - Michaela Enns was born yesterday! Mom and
baby are healthy and great and I am just beside myself with
joy. Everything went well - it was quick! An hour and half after
the water broke and I was holding my sweet baby! She was 52cm
and 3.28kg. She latched on right away and has been eating ever
since (in between naps of course).
Lots of love from the Ennses in Czech.
Keith
