CSLI is offering a useful service to its long-term students. Any
student studying at CSLI for six months or more can take
advantage of our Study Plan Service. The student meets with
our Student Service Coordinator at the beginning of their stay
in order to design a plan, including what courses to study in,
that will help them best meet their goals at CSLI. Midway
through their stay, another interview is held to determine how
the student is progressing and what changes if any could be
made. At the end of the student’s stay, a final meeting is
held to review their progress and to determine how best to
maintain this English level after leaving school. The CSLI
Study Plan is one more way that we can help you achieve your
goals in English.

| What’s That
Word? |
Our Vocabulary Contest in March
was a huge success. Students got in pairs and busily went
about identifying words that relate to pictures that were
posted around the school. The school was a flurry of activity
as students went about their teamwork that helped them improve
their vocabulary. The final winners were Annika and Lea.
Congratulations to the winners and all participants. April’s
contest will be the Speech Competition: choose your topics and
start writing!

The Secret Ingredient is… |
| We had an exciting new
theme to our graduation party last month: the first CSLI
Iron Chef Competition! Students worked in teams to
design a menu, and then on graduation day had only 75
minutes to prepare their recipe, while adding a secret
ingredient that was announced at the start of the
competition. As the teams busily prepared their
delicious dishes, we said goodbye to a great many
graduating students, including a group of 13 students
from Thailand who
had been with us for 5 months. |
|
|
Student of the Class
medals were awarded, and then the Student of the Month
award for the whole school. The winner of the latter was
Chang Han Jeon from Korea - he
wins a one-month full-time scholarship to continue his
studies at CSLI.
|
|
The eating frenzy then began, with the
school population busily sampling their classmates’ work
and voting on the best dishes. The winner, despite the
rather threatening name, was the "Poison Chicken" table
- congratulations! |

| Study For Your Job |
In July we will be having two special programs that cater to professionals in
their fields. The Law and International Relations
English Program and Professional Health English
Program will have legal and health professionals
studying English in the morning so as to improve their
topic-specific vocabulary and conversation skills. In
the afternoon, they will be visited by guest speakers
who are experts in their line of work, and also go on
outings related to their discipline. For more
information on these exciting programs and to find out
how to design a program related to your field of
specialization, please write to esl@csli.com

| Mind Power - Improving Your English |
tr>
Here we begin a monthly feature
of how to improve your English
skills. This month, let’s look at
two common expressions students often use. The first is "I
can’t understand." There is great danger in using this
expression, because ‘can’t’ has two meanings: ‘I cannot NOW’
and also ‘it is not possible for me’. If you use this
expression, you are saying ‘it is not possible for me to
understand’, so your brain will think that you will
never understand, even after the teacher explains and
after you study a lot. It is more appropriate to use the
expression "I don’t understand", which is a
clear expression of how you feel now - and which opens the
possibility of learning from practice and explanations.
Another sentence used by
students is "I came to Canada to study
English." While there is truth to this sentence, it is
best to focus on the students’ real goal: to improve their
English. Lots of students can study without improving (not a
good thing, but possible) - and more importantly, you can
improve by ways other than studying, such as watching movies,
talking with your homestay and classmates, and reading a book
or magazine. It would therefore be better to say, "I came
to Canada
to improve my English" or "I came to
to learn English."

| Welcome
back! |
We have had several students making return visits to CSLI
recently. Bjorn Ritting and Katia Alvites, who met at CSLI in
2001 and got married (!), came back for a return study visit.
Alexandra Eckerle also recently came back for her third study
period at CSLI, having previously been here in 2002 and 2005.
Alex will give us a report of her trip next month; Katia and
had this to say about coming back:
Hello CSLI family,
Almost
6 years ago we came to study English from two different parts
of the world. It was a great coincidence that we both joined
CSLI, the best school of Vancouver to learn
English having fun.
Now we came back together as a married CSLI couple to
remember the nice time when we met and our love story began
:-). For us was very nice to see that the spirit of CSLI
hasn't changed. The school still has great directors,
teachers, staff and students!!! The only thing that were
missing were the crazy cheerleaders for the famous CSLI soccer
team, but don't worry, we left the cheerleader's team
organized!
We always thank CSLI for changing our life making us the happiest
couple in the world!
Love,
Katia & Björn

Talking |
Our former student - and
favourite African drumming teacher - Yoro Noukoussi recently
welcomed a new baby boy, Sahi Achille Noukoussi.
Congratulations!
Yoshio Mibu, a student from 2000-2001, wrote
to us recently:
Hello! This is
Yoshio. I hope you still remember me. How have you been
recently? I opened a bar in Osaka with my friend. I hope
my business will be successful so I can make money and visit
Canada.
I sent a picture so you
can remember me and my face. Please keep in
touch.
