Happy Anniversary!
CSLI has just celebrated our fifth anniversary at our Yaletown campus! To celebrate the move, we had a Hot Chocolate toast to CSLI on the anniversary of our move, February 1st. The past 5 years in Yaletown have been an important part of CSLI’s growth over 14 years as a leading ESL school in Vancouver. We owe a great deal to our great agents, students, teachers, and staff! Our continued thanks and best wishes for more success and happiness in the future!

Viva Las Vegas
For our January graduation, the CSLI lobby was transformed into a casino. A number of our long-term students graduated, and there were beautiful speeches as we bade them farewell.
Medals were awarded to our Best Students of the Class, and then the much-sought-after Student of the Month award was presented.
January’s winner was Tomohiro Watanabe from Japan, who wins a one-month full-time scholarship to CSLI. He was particularly excited since he had ‘graduated’ a few minutes earlier! Students then played a variety of games – blackjack, a full-size slot machine, craps, and the ever-popular Jenga – for the chance to win wonderful prizes. The games went on for hours and a great time was had by all.

Spelling Contest
CSLI’s great Spelling Contest brought out our students’ enthusiasm and hard work, as some 20 participants sought to show their knowledge. They had worked to learn the spellings of a list of 200 very challenging words. We had four finalists at the end of four round, and it eventually narrowed down to our top two. The winner was Natasha from Korea, while the runner-up was Satoshi Maede from Japan. |
Satoshi had this to say:
When I participated in the Spelling Bee contest I actually didn’t prepare so much before. I just studied some vocabulary which my teacher Christine gave me as one of the class activity. It included the spelling of broccoli which gave me a hard time answering. The listening and pronunciation class that I take also helped me a lot especially when I answered the spelling of “adversary” which I’d never seen before. I guess I couldn’t have passed the question if I didn’t take these classes. Therefore I didn’t feel like I was able to get the prize. However I did it. I learned from this contest how important taking classes is and participating is much better and more fun than being one of the audiences. This contest will be a good memory for my whole life. |

Congratulations to the winners and to all the participants. February’s contest is Vocabulary – so crack open those dictionaries and get started!

Japanese Night
CSLI’s busiest theme night in January was Japanese night. A group of 30 students from several different countries attended, and for some it was their first time to have Japanese food. The event went on for many hours as students talked and enjoyed the delicious food. Other successful theme nights included Korean and Brazilian Nights. In February, we are looking forward to Thai, French, Slovakian, and German Nights!

Gung Hay Fat Choy!
In celebration of the Chinese New Year, which is widely observed in Vancouver, CSLI observed a famous Chinese tradition. Each student was presented with a red gift envelope when they said “Happy New Year” in one of the two Chinese languages.

New iBT TOEFL
CSLI is keeping up with the times: the TOEFL test changed last October, and so we are changing our test preparation course. The new iBT (Internet-Based TOEFL) features a speaking section, and no grammar. While some emphasis will be placed on grammar in our TOEFL course, special attention will be spent on the integrated skills of Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening that will be tested on the iBT. On the new iBT test, students are expected to read or listen to information, and then communicate their opinions verbally or in writing. Even students who practice our Practical English conversation classes will improve the skills needed for a successful TOEFL score. It looks like CSLI’s conversational approach to language learning is now becoming the testing standard!

Look Who’s Talking
Akemi Oya, May 2002
Hi. How are you doing? Long time I haven't e-mailed. I am sorry.
Last year, I got a new baby whose name is YURI. He is also a boy like my first baby. I enjoy my life and my children are so cute.
Some day I want to go back to Vancouver with my family.
This e-mail is too short. I’m sorry I don't have enough time to write. I hope you are all great.
See you soon.
