Outings & Weather
The weather in Vancouver, and in most of Canada, has been incredibly sunny and hot this month. We have taken advantage of this by taking our students on classroom excursions so they can learn more about a variety of topics.
Outings have included University of British Columbia tours, UBC Museum of Anthropology, and several others. Free Friday Activities have included a day at Playland amusement park, a tour of Whistler, and a day walking around Bowen Island. Everyone also enjoyed the famous fireworks festival Celebration of Light, which took place on four evenings at English Bay. This is one of the most popular summertime events in Vancouver, and it was better than ever this year! |

Graduation!
At the end of July, CSLI held another beach graduation party with even more fun activities than last time! While the cooler weather was a shift from what we had all month, it provided a comfortable atmosphere for our party.
After presenting certificates to our graduating students, teachers gave Student of the Class medals. The coveted Student of the Month Award went to Akram Saad from Libya, who wins a four-week scholarship to continue his studies at CSLI. Then students enjoyed a hamburger lunch before having an outdoor salsa lesson with Gustavo! Then came more games and fun on Vancouver’s most beautiful beach!

Photo Contest
CSLI held a photo contest, giving 15 students a camera and just a few days to take a series of photos that best shows the spirit of CSLI. We had many great submissions, and the winner was Marisa Juergens from Germany, whose creative photographs were featured in our CSLI Newspaper. Great job, everyone!

Spelling Bee
CSLI students worked hard to fine-tune their spelling, dotting their Is and crossing their Ts. Students had to spell a great many difficult words without being able to write them down. It was a tough competition, as so many students had prepared so well. The final winner was Whui Youn Jeon (Andy) from Korea. Congratulations on your success! In August: our Canada Trivia Contest!

Listening and Exam Preparation Classes go High-Tech
Our popular Listening & Pronunciation and Exam Preparation classes are changing with the times. For the first class, we are now using a digital format for recording and editing radio news broadcasts, and students are able to download their lessons directly onto their mp3 players or on CDs. This new format will allow students to listen even while on the bus coming to school! For the Exam Preparation Class, our computer lab has been equipped with brand new computers, test software, and headsets so students can practice the Listening and Speaking sections of the new iBT TOEFL test. The class is also making use of the internet to enable students to learn from real-world materials to help with TOEFL, Cambridge, and TOEIC preparation.

Flag Dedication
CSLI has a great many flags hanging above our lounge representing the countries of students who have studied with us. This month, a student from Bulgaria presented his country’s flag to CSLI Director Lori-Ann Keenan. In his excellent and humorous presentation, Kiril Popov explained the symbolism of the flag and gave examples of Bulgaria’s contributions to world history. We appreciate his great work and are happy to welcome Bulgaria’s flag to CSLI!

Look Who’s Talking
It is been a long time I left Vancouver in 2001. You may not remember me. The time I was at CSLI, I was called "ROCK" and was there for a short time. I just wanted to tell you how much I like you, CSLI and Vancouver. I still have some friends I keep in touch with who I met at CSLI. The time I stayed in Vancouver just came to mind right now as I read a newsletter from CSLI. And found that all teachers who gave me lessons during that time are fortunately teaching in CSLI. I checked out the website.
I got a kind of job I looked for. I work for Hyundai - Kia Motors as a technical supervisor and regional manager. I have a chance to maintain English ability with my job and talking to friends. You all helped me with this... I hope that I can have another chance to be in Canada. Unfortunately, I work with South and Central America and Caribbean. I often go to the States but not Canada, my second hometown. I hope to see you someday – I may have chance to work with North America in my company.
I will try to keep in touch with CSLI, which I like so much.
See you,
From OB ROCK = Se Chang Oh
