NOVEMBER 2005 Newsletter

Spooky Grad
Our big month-end graduation party in October was a frightfully fun experience! Students came to school all dressed up in creative costumes for our Halloween Graduation Party.

After saying goodbye to our unrecognizable graduating students, the teachers awarded medals for the best student in each class before presenting the Student of the Month award for the whole school. Oytun Arat from Turkey won the much sought-after award, which gives him a four-week full-time scholarship at CSLI.

Tomohiro Watanabe won the best costume award and received $100 cash prize!

After graduation and Halloween snacks, students and staff went off to a local nightclub to dance the night away!

TESOL
Another group of students has graduated from our TESOL Diploma class. These hardworking students spent one month full-time learning how to teach English. Congratulations to all of our newly graduated teachers and great job on your hard work!

Idioms Contest
This contest is one of our most popular, as all levels can participate equally using all the idioms they have been taught this month. Our two runners up were Gisella from Mexico, and Shuhei from Japan.

The winner that took home the big prize was Daniela from Germany!

Congratulations to all our participants

Viva La Mexico
As more and more of the cooler weather continues to come to Vancouver, Thursday theme nights have gained in popularity. The Mexicans' did a great job hiring a private chef to cook for almost half of the school. The music, singing, and dancing in addition to all the sampling of the food was a night to remember. Congratulations to Vicente and Hector for all their hard work.

Official TOEIC Test
Our annual group of students from a university in France studied hard this month to prepare for their official TOEIC test. They did extremely well, with the top score being 895. Congratulations on your hard work guys and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Fundraisers
As some of the world has not been as lucky as Canada this month, we had many fundraisers this month to help those in need, including a family that lost their home as a result of the Hurricane that hit Mexico. Other fundraisers included Children's Hospital research and our ongoing sponsorship of Canadian teachers who have been working in Sri Lanka after the Tsunami.

Upcoming Events in November
Speech contest, Chef Graduation, National Grey Cup football championship game, skiing on the local mountains and much more. Looking forward to another great month!

Look who's talking
Hello CSLI teachers and Staff,

Helloooooooo from Japan! How have you been? It's becoming cooler in Japan recently. I still have a good time with my friends here. Actually I had a small reunion in Tokyo today on Nov 7th and the member were Mark (teacher), Akiko (cookie- do you remember her nickname?), Larry (from Korea), Minami, Chiaki and me.

I'm so glad to see them again and could communicate with them a lot - I mean more than I expect, I could. As you can guess, I thought my English, especially speaking skill, is declining...But fortunately, I've been working with English native speakers since I came back to Japan so it helps me a lot NOT to decline the skill. (My grammar skill still sucks, though.... anyway.)

We talked about how we spent a really good time at CSLI and some new news from other CSLI friends. I really would like to thank you to all of you again!!! I had super fantastic, unforgettable time in 2003 and I made a lot of valuable, great friends as well!!!! I'm sure almost all Japanese previous CSLI friends love CSLI! Well, I hope I'll visit you and meet some other friends such as Sofia from Mexico.

Lots of loves

Eriko Tomari
