CSLI Students, Homestays and Staff Raise $1,110 from Terry Fox Auction:
Education and fun were combined to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation in its fight against cancer. Terry Fox's brother, Fred, returned to CSLI to show students how their support is helping cancer research in Canada and overseas. Students will also be participating again in the annual Terry Fox Fun Run later this year (these runs are held in over 30 countries world-wide with help from the Canadian embassies abroad). Thank you everyone for your generous support in donating and buying auctioned items such as music, food, wine, books, furniture and apartment items. What a great learning experience involving English participation!

Business English classes (for advanced students) are a great success as they are designed in a business setting offering professional speakers from the business world (July included Real Estate, Marketing & Architecture). Our new TOEFL program is also in demand and places are available on a waitlist basis.

Students' Summer Social Calendar is Full: Mexican Party
Each week CSLI students celebrate a different country: July includes a Korean night, Brasilian night, Mexican night Japanese and a Thai night, all a lot of fun with an average attendance of 30-50 students. These are held in restaurants and at CSLI and include dining & dancing and a chance tour students to share their cultures. Apart from our free Friday activities, Monday Night Soccer is a regular event while Tennis CSLI LobbyWednesdays are gaining popularity and are both fun and competitive. We look forward to enjoying the rest of the Summer with our students from all over the world.

Free Whistler Trip is July's most Popular Friday Activity:
Almost all students took advantage of our free activities and the beautiful weather to visit Whistler, the number one ski & summer centre in North America (only 2 hours from Vancouver)! Other Friday choices included Bowan Island tour, Playland FunPark, UBC tour and of course our big graduation picnic planned in Stanley Park. August's free Friday Activities include: Tarot-card reading, Harrison Hotsprings Tour, Aquarium Tour, Swimming lessons, Maple Syrup-making class, Professional Ballroom Dancing lessons, Greek Lunch, Playing Baseball, Pasta-making class, Craft Museum tour, Movies, Cultas Lake tour and a Submarine tour. But the most popular choice may be the International Abbotsford Air Show which features the latest aircraft from around the world. As always all entrance fees and transport is included free along with trained instructors. Resume & Interview Skills and special grammar classes are available for those wanting extra study on Fridays.

Winners of the CSLI Student of the Month Awards for June and July are......
Congratulations to Marcos Jose Casagrande from Brasil (our June winner), and Francois Ducheseau from Quebec (for July). Well done Marcos and Francois for your hard work and your full participation at CSLI. Thank you especially to Francois's agent, Pierre, for introducing such excellent Quebec students to us! They are hard acts to follow! We wish them all well and look forward to seeing them at our 2002 Student ReUnion, which they will receive free return airline tickets to attend.

Special Thanks to our Homestay families:
Thank you so much for offering your homes to our students from around the world, especially during the busy Summer months. Because of changing flight schedules and family plans, late changes are sometimes necessary. However CSLI continues to offer amongst the best homestay programs and homestay families available in Vancouver. Students at CSLI are surveyed monthly to ensure that they are thoroughly satisfied with the matches we make, and most students keep in touch with their families years after they leave Canada!

June 2000 Newsletter

CSLI is Full July and August!
Classes are overflowing at CSLI this Summer with only a few places available for half-time students in the afternoon (including our new TOEFL class). We apologize to those students who have been unable to register, however places are still available for September and October (these are expected to fill also).
We strongly recommend for students and agents to visit our CanadaWide English Network website for more information on our partner schools near Toronto, in Ottawa, Montreal and Charlottetown. They are all excellent schools and great alternatives to CSLI!

Visit our Student Reunion page and see why our past students think CSLI is so popular:

New Activities & Volunteer Co-ordinator Farzana is Far-out !
Farzana is doing an exceptional job for our students with arranging weekend and evening events. Of course she is responsible for our ever popular free Friday activities. She also assists students in participating in various social and community volunteer and "job-shadowing" programs, at no extra cost to students. See more about volunteer programs: http://www.csli.com/brochvolunteer.htm

Theme Nights and Social Events in July:

Mexican, Korean, Brasilian and Japanese Nights (dinner and celebrations) are planned this month to honour our students from these countries and to give the others a chance to experience their culture and food. Breaktime activities are arranged daily between classes to encourage students to mingle and practice their English. Farzana is organising spelling bee contests in the afternoon to challenge students and prizes will be awarded.

A special position is currently available for an overseas student wanting to study English (in the afternoon) in exchange for providing website support on our homepage (during the morning).
