CSLI CELEBRATES 12 YEARS
In order to commemorate CSLI's 12th anniversary on Thursday, September 8, our directors Lori-Ann and Lawrence hosted a breakfast party for all staff, teachers, classroom assistants, tutors, and volunteers. We all enjoyed coffee, fresh fruit, and a variety of pastries. Each member of the CSLI family was presented with a bottle of champagne and recognized individually for their part in the success of CSLI. For some of us it seems like our 10th anniversary gala was only yesterday, but as evidenced by the photo collages on the walls we have all been having fun together since September of 1992! The idiom certainly is true: Time does fly when you are having fun!

Terry Fox Auction and Run for Cancer!
This year is CSLI's 10th year raising money for the cure for cancer. We raised exactly $700 at September's auction, which gives us a 10-year total of $10890. Special thanks to our homestay families, staff, and students who participated in the auction. The Terry Fox Run was held Sunday Sept 19th all over Canada. Our staff and a few brave students showed up to run or walk the 10-km race. Many of our staff and students won door prizes, but most importantly we are getting closer to finding a cure for cancer.

Here comes the Bride!
CSLI held a demonstration wedding this month between two students. The Bride was Kanako and the Groom was Mamoru. The traditional Western ceremony was put on as an example to our intermediate students who were studying about love and marriage and customs this month. Two of the classes performed as the choir for the wedding while all the other students were guests. Special thanks to one of our homestay families, the Johnsons, for bringing in the wedding cake and the flower girls for the wedding.

Audio walking tours of Vancouver Landmarks!
A new company in Vancouver has developed new ESL material for walking tours of Vancouver and CSLI students will be one of the first to try out the tour. Class tours that were held this month were the Terry Fox Memorial, Ecology Center, Ice Cream Factory, Sports Hall of Fame, and many more....

Crusin' - on a Friday afternoon!
Grad in September was one of the largest graduations CSLI has ever had. The Sun Gods were shining on all of us as we had a perfect day of sunshine for this grand event. The ceremony was performed at the Plaza of Nations, where the grads were presented their certificates. The hardest working students in each class were presented with a special gift and of course, the CSLI Student of the Month for the school was chosen. This month we had 2 students who were equally wonderful, so we decided to give awards to both Ho Gwon (Andy) Choi and Hoe Cheol (Peter) Yu. They both won a 4-week scholarship to CSLI! Congratulations!

Upcoming October Events!
Now that the busy summer season has come to an end and the trees are changing colour, we are all looking forward to the upcoming Halloween season. Some of our October events include picking a pumpkin and carving it, getting your costume, a Granville Island Tour and Beer Tasting, African Drumming lesson, Salsa Dancing, Science World Tour, Aquarium Tour, and many more. The CSLI on-site dormitory also now has space available. The contest for October will be Idioms, so brush on up your idioms everyone!

Putting on a new face...
CSLI is continually adding new curriculum topics to our Practical English discussion themes. This month saw the introduction of the topics 'The Body' and 'Heroes'. In order to demonstrate the new North American trend towards 'makeovers' - when people change their physical appearance through exercise and new fashion styling - CSLI offered one lucky student a free makeover! Students had to nominate their classmates by writing about why their friend should receive this gift. We had two lucky winners: teacher Heather MacDonald joined student Mihoko Nakatani for an incredible day. Both were whisked away from the school on Thursday morning and brought at the end of the school day to model their new clothes and hairstyles for the school! The 'reveal' was met by screams and cheers - they both look FABULOUS!

Visiting old friends
One of the sad elements of teaching so many students is the goodbyes. Assistant Head Teacher Mark Ainley is remedying the situation by visiting former students on his vacation to Europe and Japan! A past student from Germany, Alexandra Eckerle, is arranging for Mark to teach his popular workshops on Feng Shui and Face Reading in Wiesbaden on the first weekend of October. He plans to meet former students in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy before traveling to Japan for a few weeks to do the same! We will post photos of the reunions on the CSLI website! You can contact Mark at mark@markainley.com.

Best wishes from your friends at CSLI,

Lawrence & Lori-Ann Keenan
