And the Gold medal goes
to…
August
was Olympic month at CSLI to celebrate the Olympics in Greece. We had
2 competitions every week, and Graduation this month was the big Olympic
ceremony and lunch. The students made a parade with signs from their countries.
There were lots of laughs and good competition amongst students from
over 25 countries. The countries with the most medals were the Dominican
Republic and Korea. Congratulations to all of our graduates and special
congratulations to Armandina (Mandy) Valdez from Mexico, who was the winner
of the Student of the month award for August 2004. Mandy was a hardworking
student and deserved the one-month scholarship that comes with the award.

Donald Trump and the Apprentice!
CSLI's Business class this month had a special project. They had to make
companies and be interviewed by the Director, Lori-Ann Keenan. If their
idea was approved, they could do a moneymaking venture with the other
250 students at the school. We had 3 projects which were approved: Bowling
and pizza night, Movies and hot-dog night, and souvenir T-shirt making.
Congratulations to "Boarder Breakers", the company that made
the most money! They will donate their proceeds to the CSLI children's
fund. http://csli.com/programs/index.html#diploma
Internship Students Kept
Busy!
This month was one of our busier months for internship placements. Internships
give the students a great chance to practice their English, meet Canadians,
and job shadow at the same time. Some of the companies that students were
placed with in the month were Holiday Inn, Parmaster Inc., Tom Lee Music
Studio, Seatrade, Swissmedica, Rocky Mountain Tours, Moose Travel, Champlain
Heights Elementary School, Swiss Canada, and many more. Congratulations
to all the internship students! http://csli.com/programs/index.html#internship
Upcoming September Events...
We are ready to welcome a new group of students in September as CSLI celebrates
the busiest month in our history. Some of the special events we have planned
for September are
Soccer tournaments, Tennis tournaments, a Boat Cruise graduation, a trip
to the PNE National Fair, getting a haircut, a Whistler trip, Golfing,
a Chinatown tour and lunch. Thursday Theme nights hosted by CSLI students
will be Saudi Arabian, Costa Rican, Korean, Israeli and Thai.

Across Canada Tour…
This month our students had a project: learn about every province and
territory in Canada. Every class turned their classroom into a tourist
centre for a separate area of Canada. They had posters, food samplings,
costumes, music, and loads more to teach all the other students at CSLI
about the area they had studied. Students were given their own Canadian
passport that they had to get stamped while traveling to the other rooms.
It was a very exciting event that taught everyone, including the other
staff, a little something. Great job to all the students and the winners
of the Director's choice for best presentation was from Jaime's class,
The Northwest Territories. http://www.csli.com/programs/index.html#practical
Public speaking or Dying?
Most people think public speaking is just as scary as dying. One of our
classes this month overcame their fears by going to a Toastmaster public
speaking seminar. This gave the students a chance to practice their English
in front of other Canadians while learning a lot about public speaking
skills. Congratulations to all the students who had the courage to participate.
Practice in case your friends yell "Speech" on your graduation
day and you need to give a goodbye speech in front of the whole school!
