Summer
is on the way...
...and
CSLI is looking forward to the many nationalities we will have the pleasure
of teaching and introducing Canadian culture to. Among them are students
from: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Ecuador, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Korea,
Mexico, Quebec, Peru, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Vietnam.
CSLI Students Go To Africa
Christine
Loveday, a former CSLI teacher, invited CSLI students to join her mission
to Africa by participating in a fundraising auction. Students, staff,
homestay families, and friends donated a variety of goods to the May 15th
auction, which our participants purchased. In total we raised more than
$1200, which was matched by our very generous Director, and CSLI was able
to donate almost $2500 to Christine’s mission. At the end of June, Christine
and her team will travel to Uganda to aid and support the refugees arriving
from the war-torn and poverty-stricken country of Sudan. The money will
be used for medical supplies, teaching materials, clean water, food, and
shelter.
Scholarship
Contest
Keeping
with the theme of Christine's mission to Africa, CSLI students were encouraged
to participate in a scholarship contest, for which a presentation had
to be given in front of all students and staff, on Sudan. Although we
seem to have many shy students, two contestants did come forward, both
of whom made an amazing effort in both their research and content of what
they presented. Although the decision was very difficult to make, in the
end the winner was Leandro Reis Souza of Brazil and the runner up was
Eun Sung Jin of Korea, who also took home a nice souvenir consolation
prize. Thank you to both contestants for the interest shown in this topic
and for their courage to speak in front of others in English, their second
language. Both deserve to be congratulated!
Elementary
School Students Visit
There
is a type of communication that doesn’t require perfect pronunciation,
a big vocabulary, use of idioms or any degree of fluency. This communication
was demonstrated on May 16th when a group of young elementary school children
visited CSLI. Several CSLI students had the opportunity to interact with
these six and seven- year olds; they played games, taught and learned
songs, exchanged cultural information, and laughed a lot! All participants
had a great time and it served as an excellent reminder that a smile means
the same thing in every language! Thank you to the children of Lord Roberts
Elementary for their visit and the great time we shared!
Soccer
(Football) Fever ...
seems
to be going around the world at the moment and it hasn't excluded Canada.
We are enjoying sharing the updates each day with one another on how each
other's country is doing in the FIFA World Cup. We especially have a close
connection to the latest information through our Director, Lawrence, who
is taking in the games first-hand! If you would like to contact him while
he is in Korea and then Japan afterward, please write him at: lawrencekeenan1108@hotmail.com
He'd love to catch up with any of our former students and perhaps even
take in a game together! For the rest of us who cannot be there, check
out www.csli.com/worldcup/japan
for daily World Cup updates and good luck to all!
Great
Debate
The
topic 'Money Can Buy You Happiness', yes or no, was debated between CSLI's
two most advanced classes (TOEFL and Business English) this month, in
front of a panel of judges and the rest of the CSLI student body. Other
classes' students participated by taking notes and collaborating their
decisions and discussing them, before the final decision was made. The
winner was the Business class, who enjoyed champagne after their victory.
Both classes did a fantastic job however, so congratulations to all!
