TESOL
Diploma Program's First Grad's!
July
marked the launch of CSLI's TESOL Diploma Program and our first group
of graduates have been awarded their diplomas of completion! In all 14
advanced level students will return home with training in teaching English
to those of another language. The students' program included: hands-on
observation of teachers at our school, study of classroom management strategies,
lesson planning (and assistance from our qualified teachers) and review
of and access to teaching resources. Speakers of another language are
also welcome to apply for the TESOL Certification Program, taught mainly
to native English speakers, provided students qualify with a near fluency
level of English, have passed the TOEFL exam and hold a university degree:

Student
Visas Not Required for up to Six Months of Study
The
gray area for those students studying 4-6 months has finally been cleared
, by Immigration Canada confirming recently that students can now study
up to six months on a visitor entry/visa to Canada. Although it will make
it more difficult for officials to keep statistics on the number of students
in Canada, it will certainly open the opportunities for study for many.

Great
Guest Speakers & Outings
July
was a fantastic month for guest speakers at CSLI. During our week of Law
& Crime / Alcohol & Culture we had Ms. Wendy Tomingas of MADD (Mothers
Against Drunk Drivers) speak to our students. We thank her for her informative
and insightful talk. Another great (returning) guest was Mr. Alex Roman
of Ballard Power. A Senior Systems Analyst with this world-class company,
he gave a great introduction to our Business Program students, of the
Canadian corporate world. Also, CSLI students enjoyed taking in outings
such as the UBC (University of British Columbia) Geographical Information
Centre and the United Gospel Mission (for personality & psychology week).
Sunny
Summer Friday Activities
Among
the wonderful FREE Friday activities offered in July were several sight-seeing
day trips, including: White Rock, Grouse Mountain (hiking), Whistler &
Bowen Island. Many students also took in horseback-riding, the Molson
Indy car races, concerts, a pub night, casino night and a dance festival!
Among the academic choices were classes in: listening, creating future
tenses, knowing how to use infinitives, improving study skills, pronunciation,
creative writing, past tense usage & acting. The month wrapped up with
a great night-club graduation ceremony at the hip Bar-None in Yaletown,
during which we presented our July Student of the Month, Chin Chih 'Kris'
Chen, with his award: a one month scholarship during our 10th anniversary
reunion this fall and a return airline ticket. Thanks to Kris, our Thursday
cultural night for Taiwan was also a huge success, with a record turn-out
of over 100 students plus most of the staff and teachers too! A wonderful
authentic Taiwanese meal in Chinatown was enjoyed by all!
Coach
Of The Day
We
had a very special treat for our students this month. One lucky student
was voted by the student body to represent CSLI at the Vancovuer Whitecaps
professional soccer game in July. He was honoured to spend the pre game
warm up with the players, walk out on the field and be introduced to everyone
and sit on the bench at the game and party with the players after the
game. Congratulations to our winner: Matthias Walter from Germany!
CSLI
Reunion Update
Plans
for our upcoming 10 year anniversary reunion are well underway and as
flights are being arranged and festivities organized, there has been a
small change of schedule due to a large number of students making the
request. With returning students whose reunion month was October (1992-96),
they will now join the '97-'99 students in November. Several students
requested this recently due to family and work commitments not allowing
them to come sooner, therefore we are wanting to accommodate our former
students the best we can. Please e-mail us at reunion@csli.com
if you have any questions in relation to this change or anything else
about the reunion.

wishes from your friends at CSLI,
